U13 Boys Staff

Coach Steve Magee

Coach Magee returns to our youth academy as the U13 Boy’s coach. Coach Magee is the head assistant coach for the UNCW Men’s Soccer program and was voted CAA conference assistant coach of the year in 2009. He worked five years with the Charlotte Soccer Club and spent time in a similar post at the New Orleans Soccer Academy. He is a member of the NC ODP staff and coaches locally with the Cape Fear Soccer Association. Coach Magee holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Premier Diploma and the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “B” License. He received his Bachelor of Science from UNCG in 1997 andresides in Wilmington with his wife Courtney and their son Keane.

U15 Boys Staff


Coach Ross Morgan

Coach Ross is the Director of Coaching for Coast FA in Myrtle Beach. He is a British National from Cardiff, Wales. His coaching career spans over the past 15 years, of which 9 years were in the U.K. He is a past staff for the Welsh FA and received the FAW Prelim Award in 1994, UEFA (United European Football Association) C license conversion in 1998, and the UEFA B license in 1999. He completed Part I of the UEFA A license in 2003 and Part II in 2005.

 

 

 

Coach Cam Ormsby

Coach Ormsby is Director of Coaching at OCSA.  He played intercollegiate soccer at Appalachian State University when he received a BS degree in Physical Education, and spent on year as an assistant with the program.  Before moving to the Jacsonville area with his wife Jennifer, Coach Ormsby was the at Bucknell University for 3 years.

 

Coach (CJ) Craig Johnson

Coach Johnson has been a practicing Physician Assistant with the Wilmington Orthopaedic Group, PA for thirteen years. He is a member of multiple professional medical organizations, founder and Past-President of Cape Fear Physician Assistants in Orthopaedic Surgery, and currently serves on the Sports Medicine Staff for the United States Soccer Federation and University of North Carolina, Wilmington.

Coach Johnson holds a Bachelor of Science in Health and Sports Medicine from Wake Forest University and is a graduate of the Physician Assistant Program at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In 2004, he earned a Masters Degree in Physician Assistant Studies (Orthopaedic Surgery) from the University of Nebraska.

After graduating from Wake Forest, he was an assistant coach for the Wake Forest University Men’s Soccer team and earned a USSF coaching license and was recognized with the Bob McNulty award for "Most Outstanding Coach." While an assistant coach at Wake Forest University, he was also an ODP (Olympic Development Program) coach through the NCYSA. In 2004 he earned a USSF "B" national coaching license. In 2008 he earned a USSF “A ” license.

 

 

 

U15 Girls Staff


Coach Steve Elliott

Steve played for UNC Wilmington from 1992-1996 where he was a four year starter and two year captain under current Hammerheads assistant coach Jackie Blackmore. Steve also was a Graduate Assistant Coach for the Seahawks from 1996-1998 while playing for 2 years with the Hammerheads. Steve has coaching experience at the collegiate, high school, and youth soccer level. In 1998 Steve was named North Carolina Region III Soccer Coach of the Year as well as MidEastern 4A Conference Coach of the Year at New Hanover High School. Steve received his Ph.D from the University of Virginia where he was named the 2003 Outstanding Doctoral Student in the School of Education. He has served as a volunteer assistant coach at Georgia Southern University and UNC Wilmington and has worked camps at UVA, UNCW, Rutgers, James Madison, Coastal Carolina, and Georgia Southern. Steve is originally from Bournemouth, England and has an F.A Coaching License. He is on the faculty at UNCW.

U17 Staff


Kevin Johnson

Kevin’s long coaching career began as an assistant coach for Wake Forest University in 1994, and has included stops in Tampa FL where he assisted the University of South Florida Men’s team to 2 consecutive NCAA appearances and an Elite 8 appearance in 1998. He was a member of the Florida Olympic Development Program Staff for 5 years, highlighted by a Region III Championship and appearance in the National ODP Championships in 2000. He was the Head Coach for the Div. II Florida Tech Panthers in Melbourne, FL from 2001 thru 2004 where he continued on the FL ODP staff, as well as serving as the DOC for the Palm Bay United Soccer Club.

 

 

 

 

 

Coach David Irving

Coach Irving has been the head coach for the Wilmington Hammerheads professional team for eleven years and will help coach our U17 youth academy squad this year. In 2009, he was named Division 2 Professional Coach of the Year. Coach Irving holds an English F.A. Coaching Badge and began his career in coaching with OPS Finland where he served as player/assistant coach. He brought his knowledge of soccer back to the United States in 1988 when he signed on with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers as the Director of Player Personnel/Assistant Coach. The Strikers won the National Championship in 1989. His professional playing experience includes tenures with Everton of the English Premier League, Sheffield United, Oldham Athletic Football Club and the Shamrock Rovers. He played in the U.S. for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Tulsa Roughnecks, San Jose Earthquakes, and the Atlanta Chiefs. Irving has played with such legendary players as George Best, Gordon Banks, Gerhard Mueller, and competed against opponents such as Pele and Franz Beckenbauer.

Coach Kyle Polak

Coach Polak comes to the Hammerheads Youth Academy from Huntington Beach, CA.  He played intercollegiate soccer at Cal State Dominguez, where he received Male Athlete of the Year in 2006.  He was a First Team pick for the  All California Collegiate Athletic Association in 2005 and in 2006.  He played professionally in the MLS for Chivas USA (2006-2007), and for the Wilmington Hammersheads 2008-2009.

 

 

Staff Coaches


Coach Peter Broadley

Coach Peter Broadley is currently the Executive Director of Cape Fear Soccer Association based in Wilmington NC, one of the largest clubs in NC with 2900 members. Broadley has extensive experience spanning 23 years in College soccer and has coached players at NAIA, NCAA DIV I, II, and III. He won 2 Division III National Championships as an Assistant with UNCG in 1986 and 87 and gained his first College Head coaching position at Catawba College in 1990. While at Catawba College his teams won 5 Conference Championships 2 Area Championships and reached the NAIA National finals on two occasions. Most recently from 1998-2007 at Div I High Point University his teams reached the conference semi-finals and finals twice and several of his players achieved conference honors and went on to tryout with professional clubs. Broadley has been a staff coach with the NC Olympic Development program since 1986 until present and served on the ODP South Regional staff for 5 years. He is the Boys representative on the NC ODP Steering Committee and head Coach of the 96 Boys age group. In 1997 Broadley was asked to join the NSCAA National Academy staff and was made a Senior Staff member in 2006. He has served as the NSCAA Regional Technical Director since 2002 and currently teaches courses for coaches on a regional and national level. Broadley was recently awarded the Mike Berticelli Excellence in Coaching Education Award at the January 2009 NSCAA National Convention.

 

Coach Chris Bagley

Coach Chris rejoins the Hammerheads this year as a Player and Assistant Coach after spending the previous two seasons with the USL First Division side Portland Timbers. Chris has spent a total of seven seasons in the USL appearing in over 170 games and won an A-League Championship with the Charleston Battery in 2003. In his rookie season in 2002 he helped the Hammerheads reach the National Championship game hosted in Wilmington and was a finalist for league MVP during a return in 2006. He also played with the New England Revolution of MLS appearing in six games including one playoff game in 2003. Chris is scheduled to attend the USSF’s B Coaching License course later this year.

 

 

 

Coach Phil Hufstader:

Coach Phil has lived in Wilmington for five years. He moved to Wilmington to start his professional soccer career with the Wilmington Hammerheads in 2005, after a year of training and playing in Sao Paulo, Brazil.  He played two seasons with the Hammerheads in 2005-2006 making it to the national semi finals in 2005.  A two year hiatus found Phil starting a business and co-owning a company called Developmental Elite Coaching, specializing in speed and agility training as well as soccer training.  As Phil continued his business he became a Director for Cape Fear Soccer Association in Wilmington and was asked to join the North Carolina ODP program as a staff coach. In 2009 Phil was called back into action and helped the Wilmington Hammerheads to be USL 2nd Division Regular Season Champions.  Throughout the two years off from the professional soccer world Phil took several coaching courses and now holds his Premier Diploma from the NSCAA.  He has just been invited to join the NSCAA Staff as a teacher and starts teaching NSCAA coaching courses in 2010.

 

Coach Antonio Saviano

Coach Saviano is the Academy and Player Development Director for Cape Fear Soccer Association. His responsibilities include the Development of U8-U13 age group. He is also the North America Director for Scuola Calcio, Italian Premier Soccer School. Coach Saviano has worked for many different Italian Professional Soccer Clubs, including AC Parma Scuola Calcio and AC Perugia Scuola Calcio. In that capacity he has been helping, leading and developing coaching and player development programs for over 140 affiliated soccer schools across North America and Europe. Mr. Saviano also serves on the "Task Force" coaching staff for Insegnare Calcio academy. His responsibilities in North America include the management of the Player Development Program, the support for affiliated soccer schools and the scouting of new soccer talents.

Coach Saviano is also on the NC Olympic Development Program Coaching staff and is the head coach for the 98 Boys age group, and teaches courses for NCYSA. He holds the “C” USSF license and the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.
