The Wilmington Hammerheads hosted their first of three open tryouts leading up to the 2012 season this past weekend, Dec. 3-4, at Legion Stadium.

HARRISBURG, PA–The Harrisburg City Islanders lost to the Wilmington Hammerheads 2-1 Saturday night in front of 1,473 fans at the Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. City Islanders forward Jose Angulo scored first for his club but it wasn’t enough as Hammerheads Andriy Budnyy and Chris Banks score two unanswered goals to earn Wilmington’s 11th win of the season.  full story

QUEENS, N.Y. -- Luke Mulholland had two goals and an assist for Wilmington in a 3-1 win over F.C. New York on Friday night. Jhonny Arteaga scored his 11th goal in all competitions for New York via a penalty kick for the home side.  After a 15-minute delay because of severe weather conditions, Andriy Budnyy opened the scoring in the 29th minute for the Hammerheads on the counter-attack after Mulholland had won the ball near midfield.  full story

The Hammerheads travel north this weekend for their last regular season meeting with FC New York and the Harrisburg City Islanders. Friday night FC New York plays host to the Hammerheads at Belson Stadium, and then the Hammerheads travel to take on the City Islanders at Skyline Sports Complex the following Saturday night.

Also selected for the second consecutive week is Wilmington midfielder Luke Mulholland, who had a goal and assist for the Hammerheads in their 3-0 victory against the Charlotte Eagles on Saturday. CHARLOTTE, N.C. – With just five points separating the sides in the USL PRO American Division, the Charlotte Eagles were able to close the gap on rival the Wilmington Hammerheads with a 1-0 at Charlotte Christian Stadium on Friday night. The only goal of the night was by Walter Moore in the 10th minute off a great assist by Alan Sanchez.

Wilmington, NC- After a successful win at home against Harrisburg, the Hammerheads face back to back games against the Charlotte Eagles this weekend. Friday, July 22, the Hammerheads and the Eagles kickoff at 7:45pm at Charlotte Christian Stadium, then the two teams will return to Legion Stadium for the 7:30 kickoff in Wilmington on Saturday night.

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The Wilmington Hammerheads fought for a fierce comeback on Saturday night as they rode three second-half goals to a 3-1 victory over the Harrisburg City Islanders at Legion Stadium in United Soccer League Action.  The Hammerheads moved to 9-5-3 in the USL standings, while the City Islanders fell to 7-5-5.

After a successful weekend at home, the Wilmington Hammerheads will be traveling north for their first double header of the season. Saturday, May 28th the team will take on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds following a match on Friday, May 27th against the Rochester Rhinos.

Wilmington’s Luke Mulholland was also named to the Team of the Week for the second time this season after his two-goal performance in the Hammerheads’ 3-0 victory against the Charleston Battery on Saturday night. He is joined by Gareth Evans, who put in an excellent performance as the Hammerheads recorded their second shutout of the season.

Wilmington, NC- After a weekend on the road, the Hammerheads are back at their home field of Legion Stadium hosting FC New York out of the National Division. The two teams meet for the first time on Saturday, May 14 and kick off at 7:30pm.

TAMPA, Fla. – USL announced the revised schedule for USL PRO today, with the Antigua Barracuda FC joining the American Division and the Los Angeles Blues joining the National Division as part of the adjusted divisional alignment resulting in two, six-team divisions.  The change was made necessary by the removal of three Puerto Rico Soccer League teams from the 2011 schedule earlier this week.

USL announced today that it has formally removed the three Puerto Rico Soccer League (PRSL) teams from the 2011 USL PRO schedule.  PRSL teams Puerto Rico United, River Plate Puerto Rico, and Sevilla FC Puerto Rico were participating in USL PRO as part of an agreement between the two leagues to grow professional soccer in Puerto Rico.

For the second time this season two Hammerhead players have been named to the USL PRO’s Team of the Week.  Defender Ivan Becerra and Midfielder Paul Nicholson’s performances in Friday’s game against Pittsburgh secured their spots on the acclaimed roster. 

Hammerheads’ Goalkeeper Brock Duckworth and Midfielder Luke Mulholland were both named to the USL PRO Team of the Week on Tuesday, April 19.

Sunday’s win against the Rochester Rhinos was the professional debut for both Duckworth and Mulholland, each playing an exceptional game.

Hammerheads owner Bill Rudisill announced today that three Hammerheads games will be broadcast on the Fox Soccer Channel.  Those games will be home games on Friday, June 24 and Friday, August 5, 2011, while the broadcast on Saturday, June 18th will be an away game in Orlando, Florida. The Wilmington Hammerheads have two former players, Chris Murray & Jyler Noviello, returning to the 2011 roster, as well as new player,  defender Jamie Scope, pending USL and USSF approval.

The Wilmington Hammerheads have added four former Ventura County Fusion players to their 2011 team. Dylan Riley, Ivan Becerra, Manny Guzman, and Hakop “Jack” Avesyan have all signed with the Hammerheads, pending USL and USSF approval.

Wilmington Hammerhead’s Game Day Coordinator Roxanne DeMonte, newly signed player Richard Jata & Sledge visited Cape Fear Middle School on February 9th for their Career Day.  Jata talked to the students on the importance of a good education in order to fulfill their dreams.  Sledge shook hands and posed for pictures with the students.  A great time was had by all!

To say one person was responsible for the return of the Wilmington Hammerheads could easily be thought of as overly simplistic. After all, it took an ownership group led by Bill Rudisill and other investors to have the team preparing for the 2011 USL PRO season.

Whether it was nearby or far away, the former part-owner of the Wilmington Hammerheads sought someone who would treat the franchise the way he and his friends had during their tenure – like a part of his family.

So when he announced the franchise’s return, following a year of dormancy, it seemed right that his new co-owners were seated right next to his wife, children and grandchildren.

“It’s just such a community asset,” said Dr. Mario Basegoda, one of the new part-owners who has played in the area’s recreational leagues for a dozen years. “We thought, ‘It’s ridiculous that … this team has left.’ It got me mad.”

For more than a year, Rudisill pulled every string he could to keep the Hammerheads at the forefront of people’s minds. He had a lot of interest from European businessmen. He thought in April an investor from Chicago would close the deal.

Cindy Harris calls herself a “soccer mom extraordinaire.” When her husband, Dr. Clyde Harris, called one night in April and said, “We need to do something,” she never hesitated.

Harris, Basegoda and Dr. Sara Borcherding all work with Dr. Dale Boyd, one of Rudisill’s old partners during their ownership reign. They all talked about what it was like to own the team.

The Harris’ son plays youth soccer for former Hammerhead Kenny Bundy. Cindy called him. Bundy got her in touch with coach David Irving and, “it went from there,” she said with a laugh.

Tuesday’s press conference brought lots of smiles and laughs, and a few emotional tears. It’s what happens with a family. But, as Rudisill knows, it’s not always that way.

That’s something Rudisill is plenty used to over the years. Even at the press conference, he worked a little more than everyone, shaking hands, giving directions, making introductions, all with a bulky brace on his leg after tearing up several muscles.
