TAMPA, FL -- United Soccer Leagues announced Thursday the statistical award winners for the 2009 USL Second Division season, honoring four players who led the league in individual categories.
For the first time since the 2001 season, the Scoring and Goal Scoring Champions are not the same player.
Trailing Wilmington’s Jamie Watson (right), by one goal entering the last match of the season, Richmond’s Matthew Delicate (left) hit the back of the net twice in his club’s 2-2 draw at Wilmington last Saturday. The tallies bumped Delicate’s total to 13 on the season, giving the Kickers striker the Goal Scoring crown.
Meanwhile Watson finished as the league’s Scoring Champion, combining his 12 goals with six assists for 30 points, while leading the Hammerheads to their first regular season championship in the club’s 14-year history.
Kenny Bundy, Watson’s Wilmington teammate, recorded nine assists en route to becoming this season’s Assists Champion. The midfielder beat out Richmond’s Mike Burke, who finished the season with seven assists.
Harrisburg’s Chase Harrison is honored as the GAA Champion, after finishing the regular season with a 0.812 goals against average. The goalkeeper appeared in 16 matches for the City Islanders in 2009, posting shutouts in eight, on his way to recording an 8-4-4 record.
All four players will be back in action this Saturday when the USL Second Division Semifinals see Harrisburg visiting Richmond and the Charlotte Eagles taking on Wilmington. Both matches kickoff at 7:00 pm ET. The winners advance to the USL-2 Championship game set for Saturday, August 29. The final will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel at 11:00 pm ET.
Further USL Second Division honors will be announced Monday, August 24.
