The Hammerheads run in the 2009 US Open Cup came to an end on Tuesday evening in Rochester, NY. The Hammerheads dropped the game 2-1 to the Rochester Rhinos in the quarterfinals.
The Hammerheads were with out two key starters, goalkeeper Daryl Sattler and defender Tim Karalexis, both who are nursing injuries. This gave goalkeeper Kyle Polak his first start of the season. Although Rochester began the match with much control the Hammerheads were able to hold them to a 0-0 score at halftime.
After the half Jonny Menyongar was able to find the back of the net in the 54th minute to give Rochester a 1-0 lead. Rochester would then add to their lead in the 67th minute when Andrew Gregor was able to convert a penalty kick after foward Mike Ambersley was pulled down in the box by Hammerheads defender Tweety Walters.
Hammerheads forward Jamie Watson was able to cut the deficit in half with a goal in the 72nd minute. The Hammerheads would then surge in the finally minutes of the game with many opportunities but just could not get the ball in the net. The 2-1 loss ended the 2009 Open Cup for the Hammerheads.
The Hammerheads will now return to their regular season USL2 schedule on Friday night when they host Western Mass at Legion Stadium. This game is set to kickoff at 7:00pm. Tickets may be purchased via
