Hammerheads host Open Cup game Tuesday

June 8, 2009
The Hammerheads will host the Charlotte Eagles Tuesday night in the First Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. This game is scheduled to kickoff at 7:00pm at Legion Stadium in Wilmington. The Hammerheads are returning to the tournament after a two year absence.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup dates back to 1914 and is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. The cup is open to amateur and professional teams in the United States.
The Hammerheads and Eagles will face off for the third time this season when they meet on Tuesday night. The first two meeting were part of the USL Second Division regular season. The first of these two matches ended in a 2-2 tie and the second with the Hammerheads winning 6-3.
Hammerheads Assistant Coach Chris Bagley commented “The US Open Cup is great tournament that the Hammerheads have had some tremendous success in over the years. We’ve been able to host a number of MLS games v. DC United, Dallas, and New York as well as USL First Division teams and really have held our own, with the highlight being beating Dallas 4-1 in 2003. With that said you have to win early round games to get to that point and Charlotte is a good team that has been steadily improving each week in league play and will certainly be a difficult opponent.”
Tickets are available for the match by calling 910-202-0518 or by visiting www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com. Youth passes will be honored at this game.
